The Stelvio Pass Road in Venosta Valley in South Tyrol

The panoramic road to the Stelvio Pass

The winding mountain road leading to the Stelvio Pass is the highest pass road in Italy (at 2,758 m) and is considered one of the most impressive roads in the world, with its 48 bends on the South Tyrolean side. The 49 km long "Queen of the Alpine roads" was completed between 1820 and 1825 under adverse circumstances in record time.

The road constructed during this bold prestige project has hardly changed since. The characteristic bends in front of the impressive panorama of the Stelvio National Park make the Stelvio Pass road one of the most popular routes for cyclists and motorcyclists. Every year in late summer, thousands of road cyclists participate in the Stelvio Bike Day. During this day, the entire road is closed to all motorized traffic.

Stelvio Bike Day - a car-free day
The Stelvio Bike Day follows the route of the most famous leg of the Giro d'Italia road race and is one of the local cycling highlights. This famous pass road, with its 48 bends and 1,869 m in height will reveal its challenges for participating cyclists. As in every year, the legendary road through the Stelvio Pass wil be closed to traffic after Trafoi for this day.
Cycling in Venosta Valley
With the period from March to late November offering ideal conditions for bike trips and excursions, the Vinschgau valley boasts the longest bike season in the Alpine region. Dedicated bike points also provide specialised cycling services, including bike shuttles across the entire valley, guided tours and professional advice. The Vinschgau also features a wonderfully effective bike hire network, with combined tickets enabling visitors to use public transport, hike bikes and even return them to different locations at no extra charge. And of course, dedicated bike hotels provide ideal accommodation for cycling enthusiasts.
